DETOUR
A 26-kilometre-long heating pipe. Can you imagine that?
In Rotterdam, anything is possible. The Nieuwe Warmteweg is a pipe that will bring waste heat from the port into the city centre. This heat will be used in both residential and commercial buildings. With this project, the only one in the Netherlands, CO² emissions will be significantly reduced making it possible to achieve the objectives of the Rotterdam Climate Initiative. The whole project is comprehensive, spectacular and breathtaking to follow.
During Museum Night, work will be done on the part of the heating pipe that is being pulled from the Wilhelmina Pier through the Rijnhaven and under Katendrecht. Two 750-metre pipes will be welded together at the Koningshaven to form one long pipe. On the Wilhelmina Pier, around ten cranes will carefully fit the pipe precisely to the hole that has been drilled. With a large hook, the pipe will then be attached to a drilling rig that will pull it under Katendrecht.
WORK ON THE ROAD
The Nieuwe Warmteweg will also have quite an impact on car and tram traffic during Rotterdam Museum Night!
Don't miss out on a visit to the Nederlands Fotomuseum & the SKVR Beeldfabriek on your route through Museum Night. In addition, this year LantarenVenster is joining in the fun for the first time! After your visit to these venues, you will see the spectacular cranes on the construction site. If you were already planning to tackle the Erasmus Bridge by bike or you're not afraid of a nice healthy walk, then you won't have a problem. However, the Erasmus Bridge and the Wilhelminakade are closed to cars, buses and trams. That’s why every effort has been made to ensure that your journey to the Nederlands Fotomuseum and LantarenVenster will be an exciting experience.
The Wilhelminapier can be reached by taking:
THE MUSEUM NIGHT BOAT
From the Willemskade, the boat travels to the ss Rotterdam and then on to the Hotel New York. And don’t forget that the Swan Market will be landing on the boat for the ultimate shopping experience, with a creative range of fashion, jewellery, vintage, accessories and affordable art.
From the stop at the Hotel New York it's only a short walk to the Nederlands Fotomuseum and LantarenVenster. The journey is free on presentation of your passkey.
THE METRO
From the Leuvehaven metro station it's just one stop to the Wilhelminaplein (metro line D). From there you can walk to the Nederlands Fotomuseum and LantarenVenster. For the metro you will need a public transport chip card, which is available for purchase at all metro stations. The last metro from Wilhelminaplein to Leuvehaven leaves at 12:27 am.
